The story behind the Tulip Stairs, Queen’s House

The Tulips Stairs, Queen’s House, is one of the best staircases in London and certainly one of the most photographed (along with the ones in Tate Modern and Heal’s). There’s really just one shot here, looking straight up, and the only decision to make when composing is where in the frame the lower end of the stairs should start.

Converting to black and white does offer more creative choices. I hadn’t thought of going high key when I took the shot but a little experimentation with the processing revealed what I think is the most pleasing outcome, and one that’s just a little different from all the other shots you’ll see of this.
